LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ten newspapers won the coveted Triple Crown in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ writing and section contests that ended Wednesday.

The Boston Globe and the Washington Post, competing in the over-250,00 circulation division, won Top 10 recognition for their daily, Sunday and special sections. Joining them were: Palm Beach Post and Omaha World Herald in the 100,000-250,000 category; Colorado Springs Gazette in the 40,000-100,000 circulation division; Beaver County (Pa.) Times and Bellingham (Wash.) Herald in under-40,000; and the Hilton Head (S.C.) Island Packet; Naperville (Ill.) Sun and Sauk Valley Newspapers (Sterling, Ill.) in under-20,000.

Last year, four newspapers overall earned the honor.

"In these times of trouble (for the newspaper business), I feel that this will be great motivation for my staff to continue to do great work," said Globe sports editor Joe Sullivan.

Boston Globe writers also placed in the top 10 in five writing categories – explanatory, columns, features, projects and game stories.

Washington Post writers, under the direction of sports editor Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, also earned top 10 finishes in explanatory, breaking news and features.

"Joe and Emilio are two of our very finest sports editors," said APSE first vice president Garry D. Howard, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sports editor who ran the contest. "Their success comes from hard work and attention to detail."

The top five finalists in the writing categories will be posted on the APSE website – apse.dallasnews.com – by April 1. Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE convention in Pittsburgh.
