Last summer then-APSE president Gerry Ahern called on every member of APSE to recruit and sponsor at least one college student as a member of our organization.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Ahern also asked sponsoring editors to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to http://apsportseditors.org/how-to-join/

Several APSE members have answered the call. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we're posting bios of the latest wave of student members.

Today, meet an incoming University of Missouri freshman sponsored by Northwest Herald sports editor Jon Styf.

College status: Incoming freshman at the University of Missouri in 2013.

Sponsoring member: Jon Styf, Northwest Herald sports editor

Experience: Over three years of writing for publications including the Chicago Tribune's The Mash (2011-2012), The Voice (Huntley High School student newspaper/website, 2010-2013), the Sun Day (2012) and the Northwest Herald (2013).

How did you become interested in sports journalism? I've always enjoyed writing. It really took off when I took a journalism class in high school and read a compilation of Rick Reilly's columns (not his new stuff!).

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Writing well is terribly difficult, and it requires a good amount of hard work and determination.

Dream job? Features writer for any big magazine (SI, Esquire, etc.).

Hobbies/interests/activities: Playing tennis, reading, eating pizza
