Recruiting and mentoring student members is a priority for APSE.

For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

To sponsor a student member, go to our How to Join page.

Several APSE members have answered the call during the past two years. To recognize them and the new members they've brought into our organization, we're posting bios of the latest wave of student members.

Today, meet an Arizona State University junior sponsored by Mark Faller.

College status: Junior, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in 2013-14

Sponsoring member: Mark Faller, Sports Center Director, Arizona Republic

Experience: Broadcast intern for AZcentral Sports in Phoenix. Interned for the Oakland Athletics during 2013 Cactus League. Other experience includes shooting/editing video for ASU News, freelance reporting for the Arizona Republic, TV/radio broadcasting (NJCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament, The Blaze 1330 AM at ASU), and camera/production work for the Pac-12 Networks for ASU soccer and softball.

How did you become interested in sports journalism? I grew up playing and competing in a variety of sports through high school. When I realized my dream of competing at the collegiate level was no longer in the forefront, I soon began to pursue sports broadcasting. My overall passion for sports drives me to cover those with the desire to compete and pursue the stories of the interesting people within the sports world.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Everyone has a story to be told; one just needs to be eager enough to uncover it. The best stories are those that have the power to motivate others.

Dream job? Becoming a multimedia sports storyteller. I also would like to prove to young girls interested in athletics that women can be cultivated by sports the same as men. If it’s their dream to work in the sports world, it is possible to be successful and appreciated.

Hobbies/interests/activities: I have always been passionate about all sports but really focused on soccer, track and swim. I also like to involve myself in student organizations on campus.
