For a $25 fee, students gain access to the minds and events that will shape the future of sports journalism. Sponsoring editors are asked to help mentor the students as they prepare to enter the profession.

Today, meet a Virginia Tech senior sponsored by Carrie Cousins.
Alex Koma
College status: Senior majoring in communication and minoring in professional writing at Virginia Tech in 2013-14
Sponsoring member: Carrie Cousins
Experience: General manager of student television station VTTV and sports editor of student newspaper the Collegiate Times. Work for Virginia Tech’s University relations department, creating videos on students and events in the Blacksburg area. Enrolled in Bleacher Report’s Advanced Program for Sports Media. Blog for a variety of sites, including BeyondUSports and Uloop. Worked as an editorial intern for AOL’s Patch.com to produce hyperlocal news content.
How did you become interested in sports journalism? As a Pittsburgh native, an interest in sports has been an almost necessary requirement for any member of my family since birth. I quickly discovered that actually playing sports was not my field of expertise, but I had a gift for writing about and discussing sports, making sports journalism a natural career choice.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned? Every person you meet knows something you don’t. I try really hard to listen to everyone, regardless of who they are, because everyone has something to offer.
Dream job? To be able to do something different every day. I love just about every sport, and I really enjoy writing about them, talking about them on camera and using video to tell stories. If I land a job where I can do any one of those things on any given day, I’ll be thrilled.
Hobbies/interests/activities: Avid reader and moviegoer … addicted to a variety of TV shows.
