The Associated Press Sports Editors Northeast Region will hold its fall meeting Dec. 6 at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. A great day of professional development seminars and networking is planned, so sports editors are encouraged to attend or send a staff member in their place.
Because the APSE national convention is in the Northeast (Boston, June 22-25), we will not have a spring meeting so that Northeast members can devote travel funds and time to attending that. So this will be our only meeting for the next year (although a brief regional business meeting will be held at the convention).
There are plenty of hotel options for those who wish to arrive the night before, and Quinnipiac has offered to arrange transportation for members from New York who wish to take MetroNorth rail to New Haven station.

11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.: Best ideas session

12:30-1:30: Lunch with Quinnipiac journalism students and faculty
— Like last spring at Marist, the school will host a luncheon at which APSE professionals will be paired with j-school students and faculty to talk about the business, share ideas and network a bit. Lunch provided by Quinnipiac in the Sports Center’s University Club.
1:45-3 p.m.: Covering youth sports, from Little League to high school varsity
— Daniel E. Doyle, Jr., the author of the Pulitzer-nominated "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting,'' will discuss how his advice to parents of young athletes can apply to sports editors and writers who cover youth and high school sports. Doyle is also the founder and executive director of the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island. Moderator: Joe Sullivan, sports editor, Boston Globe.
3:15-4:45 p.m.: Chasing Rumors
Stories blow up faster than ever before. How do you balance responding to Twitter reports and other online breaking news, pressure to be first with the story and your desire to get the story right? Two reporters at the leading edge of their beats — Gary Washburn, NBA writer for the Boston Globe and a New York-based writer to be named later — and two editors who manage situations like this every day — Matt Pepin of Boston.com and Mary Byrne of The Associated Press — will offer their insights and answer questions on how they handle reporting in a 100-mph environment.
