APSE reached out to editors from local and national outlets which regularly cover horse racing and the Triple Crown races as part of the organization’s new Q&A series. Their input provides insight into how organizations of varying print circulations, from different regions and online presences went about planning for the event and executing their coverage.

"The report card is disappointing and shows how far we have to go," said Mike Sherman, APSE's president and sports editor of The Oklahoman. "It's imperative that APSE continue to encourage and assist member organizations as they strive to build staffs that reflect the growing diversity of our communities." To that end, Sherman noted several efforts APSE has used to foster diversity.

The Sports Journalism Institute directors Sandy Rosenbush and Leon Carter will accept the medal during a banquet Monday, Oct. 26 on the University of Missouri.
